Spirit of God

When & Where did it come from?

Not much is discussed about the Holy Spirit in the Bible. However, Genesis 1:2 tell us that it was present at the beginning of creation:

'Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.'

Thus all of the three persons of the trinity were there at the beginning. What was created was the rest of the things we see around us. All of it.

Different Kinds of Spirits

The bible talks of various forms of spirit:

  1. Spirit of God/Lord
  2. Spirit of Wisdom
  3. Familiar Spirits
  4. Spirit of Jealousy
  5. Evil Spirit
  6. Sorrowful Spirit
  7. Lying Spirit (1 Kings 22:22)
it also tells us that God is the God of the spirits of all flesh.

What can the spirit do?

  1. Spirit can move around (Genesis 1:2)
  2. Spirit of the Lord shall not always strive with man (Genesis 6:3)
  3. It can give you wisdom, understanding, knowledge and all manner of workmanship (Exodus 31:3)
  4. Familiar spirits defile you and hence you are instructed to stay away from them (Leviticus 19:31)
  5. Spirit can make you prophesies

Properties of Spirit

  1. Spirit is transferable. In Numbers 11:25 God takes spirit from one person and gives it to 70 others
  2. God can harden spirit (Deuteronomy 2:30)
  3. Spirit can descend on someone with rituals (1 Samuel 16:13)
  4. Evil spirit can leave when music is played (1 Samuel 16:23)
  5. Spirit returns to a thirsty/hungry man when he drinks/eats (Judges 15:19, 1 Samuel 30:12)
  6. The words of God may be in ones tongue by Spirit of the Lord (2 Samuel 23:2)
  7. Spirit can speak (1 Kings 22:21)

How God Uses Spirits?

  1. God can send evil spirit (Judges 9:23)
  2. Spirit of the Lord can make you move from place to place (Judges 11:29, 13:25)
  3. Spirit of the Lord can rent you apart (Judges 14:6)
  4. Spirit of the Lord can make you go on a killing spree (Judges 14:19)
  5. Spirit of the Lord can set you free physically (Judges 15:14)
  6. Spirit of the Lord can change you as a man (1 Samuel 10:6)
  7. Spirit of God can kindle anger (1 Samuel 11:6)
  8. 1 Samuel 16:14 is interesting wherein 'Spirit of the Lord departs Saul and an evil spirit from the Lord troubles him. Later again we see that David plays a harp and the evil spirit departs from him.

Genesis 1:3 baffles only scientists

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

Scientists think that this is a fallacy in the Biblical scripture and use it as a logical conclusion to establish that God word is non-sense. The sun is mentioned to be created later on the 4th day.

Science does not know how light can be generated without a source. That's ignorance. If God cannot create light without a source, he is no God at all. He who created all things must also know how to give light to a planet or to an entire universe. He's all powerful and that makes him God. Our ignorance cannot be a limitation to the power of God.

Even the scripture exhibits excellence by just mentioning light and not referring to any source of it until latter. If the do, they knew what was being written. For the faithful God will always remain almighty and not limited to the knowledge that science has.

The first few versus of the bible are truly powerful and establishes the supremacy of God

How much can one verse of the bible communicate?

Genesis 1:1 reads:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Over the years many have read and interpreted this in various ways. Here is what some of them had to say.

1. First it declares that God created the heavens and the earth:

  • Thus it stresses that not big bang nor other physical forces created all that is there around us
  • It also mentions that one God and not many Gods made everything - This is important as the Bible does acknowledge that there are other gods out there of which the devil is one. However, other versus in the bible clarifies of which one is supreme.
  • The verse also speaks of Time (as there is a beginning), Space (heavens - not one but many) and Matter (earth) - As per our knowledge it was only in the 20th century that man confirmed of the basic components of the universe. The Bible (or the word of God) was just smart enough to declare it 2000 years earlier.
  • This first verse in Hebrew Bible contains 7 words. Seven is considered as a number of completion in the bible. And there is triple intensification of the number 7 in this verse. To learn more about this watch the youtube video:
2. Now there is also pictorial interpretation of Hebrew letters. What is revealed from that is even more startling. It reveals that 'The Son of God will be destroyed (or killed) by his own hand on the cross. It also says that everything was created by the Son of God. And that he would be our Redeemer.

Is it not powerful? Well there are many more things about this first verse of the Bible, but I will let you explore that. I think you have enough reason to start exploring with what is mentioned here. Know the true God. He created you and loves you.
